As we move into this new year of 2012, I hear lots of people voicing hopes, goals, dreams and desires, for making this year, a better, more successful one than 2011. I would like to share with you some understanding and advice on setting your Goals, in ways that make them easier to Achieve. I hope also to point out a couple of common pitfalls, which you can choose to avoid when setting your goals.

Those of you who attended my talks will recall how we discussed at length the difference between your “Conscious Mind” and your “Conditioned Mind” (or Unconscious/Subconscious mind). Using your Conscious Mind more intelligently to give clear instructions to the Conditioned Mind, makes it easier for your Conditioned Mind to create the results you desire. This applies more than ever when setting goals:

• Your Conscious Mind is the Goal Setter – you reason, think and plan what we want in your life, and judge the results, using your Conscious intellect.

• However, your Conditioned Mind is the Goal Getter – it is in this domain that most of the work is done to achieve your goals.

Understanding this, you can see how important it is for you to set clear instructions, in a way which is easy for your Conditioned Mind to follow, making it easier for it to create what you want in your life.

Achieving goals is about CHANGE! Keep doing what you are doing, and you will keep getting what you are getting. You don’t need any goal for that, as you are already doing it. However, if you want different results in your life, then you need to change what you do. This can be challenging. Many of us like to stay within our comfort zone. It feels safer to keep walking the same old path, than to venture out onto a new one. But if you want to get to somewhere new, you need to alter your route. The only way to achieve any new goal is to Change.

There are two vital elements you need in order to achieve ANY goal. Almost ever goal you have not achieved comes down to one of these being absent:

• A real desire to achieve the goal. If you really, really, really want something, then you will move Heaven and Earth to get it. The more you want it, the more likely you are to get it.

• Belief that you can achieve the goal. If you doubt your ability to get what you want, you will most likely manifest that doubt.

As a Life Coach, I can’t help you with the first element. Only you can decide what you want, and how badly you want it. I do however have techniques, which can easily help you to release any limiting beliefs in your ability to achieve your goals.

There are many different models on how to set goals, in order to word them in a way which your Conditioned Mind can work with easily. I prefer to keep things simple, so I will share with you the basic technique of setting a “SMART” goal. First get clear on what result it is you really want to achieve. Write it down, and then check if it is SMART using the guide below.

Is your goal:

• S – Specific and Simple

• M – Measurable and Meaningful to you

• A – As if now, Achievable, and relevant to All areas of your life

• R – Realistic and Responsible (Ecological)

• T – Timed and Towards what you want

You will probably find yourself rewriting your goal several times as you refine it, to get it to fulfil all of these criteria. It can also help to work with someone on to get your goal just right. Fresh eyes, or experienced ones, can often see things that you overlook. Here is a format for starting off your goals which I recommend: “It is now 2pm on the 3rd of May 2012 (timed) and I have just completed/achieved(as if now)…. fill in your goal here

Some common mistakes to steer clear of:

• Setting too many goals. What you FOCUS on is what you get! It is much easier to focus on your goals if you work on only one, or two, or at most three goals at a time. Having twenty goals make look great on paper, but you are unlikely to be properly focussed on any of them.

• Make sure your goal is one individual goal. Clients often come to me with complex goals, which are actually several goals rolled into one. Again this detracts from the focus, and makes it harder to achieve.

• Setting goals for things you don’t really want. This may sound obvious, but if you don’t really want something, you are less likely to make the effort to achieve it. This would include goals you set to try and keep others happy.

• Not acting on your goals. Just setting the goal is not enough, you also need to act on it. Ideally you should take the first step as soon as you have set the goal. Make an action plan on how you will get to your goal.

There is obviously a lot more to be said about Setting Goals, and there is much I can do with Clients to ensure they achieve their goals once they have set them. I have great techniques to enhance and intensify goals, and to help plant them deeper into the Conditioned Mind. These really need to be done individually and transmitted in person.

I hope you chose to take value from what I have shared here. My January talk at Constellation House (15th February, at 6.45 for 7pm) will expand on this same topic of Goal Setting.

So if you would like to explore this further, please ring or email me to book your seat. You are welcome to bring a goal or two with you, in case we have time to work on them in more detail.

Article from the Constellation House Newsletter November 2011

Cape is so full of creative hubs it’s no wonder it was recently voted World Design Capital for 2014. One of those hubs is the Montebello Design Centre in Newlands. On a recent visit I was drawn to the courtyard at the bottom left of the property, where the work of Right Sculptures adorns every corner. The business is named after the owner, but it is Right in more ways than one. Although I came looking only for a small bench for the front garden at Constellation House, once I entered that wonderland of figures, animals and hearts I ended up with a little more: A life-size pig (one can comfortably sit on it), a laughing African Buddha with a well-shaped belly and two heart bowls. Right was so happy that he generously gave me a big wooden heart as well. One can’t go wrong in buying Right sculptures!

Since this newsletter is about stories, I thought to attempt a little mini story about Right Sculptures, which is actually a partnership between Right, the businessman, and his brother Tarasai, the artist. It looks like an ideal partnership to me. They started six years ago when they arrived in Cape Town from Zimbabwe and now their courtyard at Montebello has three sculptors at work, carving away amid freshly-shaven wood pieces that smell of camphor, pine and other woods I am not so familiar with, all from local tree fellers. The smell of fresh wood awakens my senses and curiosity.

I asked Tarasai what his approach to starting a sculpture was. He said sometimes he follows the shape of the wood and lets it emerge organically (an artist after my own heart!); at other times he gets an idea of a figure or animal that he wants to create and then he plans more before starting. If he really likes a piece he finds it hard to sell, but it also makes him happy if buyers love the sculptures that are close to his heart.

The carvers of Right Sculptures are there to work and carve every day, no matter what the weather. When it rains, they take shelter in a wendy house where they can work on smaller pieces.

They are looking to expand to other places they can sell from; I wish them much luck!

By Pam Sykes

Article from the Constellation House Newsletter November 2011

Stories are woven deeply into the web of our everyday interactions. We tell stories to teach our children or make a point to co-workers, to honour important people in our lives, to sell our goods or ideas, to come to terms with challenging experiences, to entertain or simply because we’ll burst if we don’t. As Maya Angelou says, there is no greater burden than an untold story. The act of telling our stories can be a profoundly moving, transforming and healing experience. And once the burden of the untold story is laid down, all sorts of other creativity can begin to flow.

Digital storytelling is a technique that marries the very oldest storytelling tool of all, the human voice, with 21st century technologies to create 2-3 minute videos that capture the essence of a human story. Crucially, this is not about turning your story over to professionals – it’s about gaining the skills you need to do it for yourself.

Ndingu Minah from Pam Sykes on Vimeo.

A typical digital storytelling workshop lasts three days. At its heart is the Story Circle: A facilitated group session in which you tell your story (maybe for the first time ever) and begin to understand how you might transform it into a video. Then comes script writing, recording, picture sourcing, and a tutorial in how to use video editing software, before you launch into the hard work of assembling your story.

Part of the magic in the process comes from the impossible deadline: Three days to complete a movie is completely unrealistic. And so we are set free of perfectionism and can just work to see how far we get – which is invariably much, much further than we ever imagined.

Digital storytelling is for anyone who has a story they want to work with, or work through: Whether it’s a tribute to a grandparent, a gift for a child, a message to colleagues or just something you want to do for yourself.

There are four workshops scheduled for 2012:

February 9-11

May 31- June 2

August 30-Sept 1

Nov 1-3

There are also four Wednesday evening information and story sharing sessions on January 25, May 16, August 15 and October 17.

If you are interested in attending of the workshops, please contact Pam Sykes on 083 324 2468 or pam@pamsykes.com.

Constellation House is now just over 18 months old – and just as human identity starts to emerge and declare itself as toddlers move into the world, so this “baby” of mine is developing an independent identity that continues to surprise, delight and enlighten me. Over the past year and a half I have turned often for inspiration to Margaret Wheatley’s book A Simpler Way.

She writes: “Life wants to happen. It calls itself into existence. Out of all information and possibilities an entity comes into form. An Identity emerges. A self has created itself. This process of self-creation is visible everywhere. It is life taking form, creativity made visible, meaning becoming shape. It is self-organization.”

“Self-organization is the capacity of life to invent itself. Out of nothing comes something. No externally imposed plans or designs are required. This process of invention always takes shape around identity…. All living systems have this ability to create themselves, not just initially, but as the continuous process of their lives.”

I think Constellation House is well on its way to becoming just such a living system, with a form determined by the people who move through it, who work and play and find a home here. The name “Constellation House” was inspired by the Family Constellation work that makes up part of my own therapeutic practice. This work asks important questions: How do we stand in relationship to each other within our family systems? Are we connected? Do we see each other?

I have realized that within the larger system of the Constellation House community, the same questions can be asked. Just as our families are living systems that change from generation to generation, so too are the larger communities and systems that we choose and help to create in our lives. As people move in and out of these physical spaces, though the garden and inner parts of the house, they create a very specific Constellation of their own. What of my role in this system? For me, the essence of my task right now is to observe and learn what serves Constellation House best if it is to be a healthy, vibrant living system that can continually create itself out of itself, emerge over time and grow into its true Identity.

Home is where we feel comfortable, nurtured and supported; and when practitioners and facilitators choose a space to be a home to their work, it should be because the environment and philosophy support what they want to do in the world. If that is why people stay and come integrated into the living system of Constellation House, then my vision it totally fulfilling itself.
I have learned a lot during the past 18 months. I have learned that systems that work take their own time to grow, and that they need constant evaluation of what works and what doesn’t. I’ve become a great juggler of roles I never imagined for myself, as I have worked on marketing and also on finding individuals that I can delegate to who understand not only their own specialty like admin or IT, but also what it is that Constellation House stands for.

All living systems change as they grow, and certainly Constellation House as it stands today is not what I initially dreamed of – but would I do it all again if I knew all the hurdles I would have to leap? YES! I have faith that the new system that has emerged will continue to grow, change and evolve with all of us.
As it does so, I will continue to observe, learn, guide, laugh, love, cook, dance and create all the things I love to do. Thank you all for joining me on this journey, and for helping to create the healthy living system that is growing around us.

‘Emergence’ refers to the idea that systems of a certain level of complexity often give rise to new and sometimes startling properties. While scientists have identified more than two dozen types of emergence, according to philosopher Philip Clayton they can usefully be grouped into four major categories. “For simplicity’s sake … one could speak of four major transitions in the natural world that evidence the phenomenon of emergence: (1) quantum physics to macro-physical systems and chemistry, (2) chemistry to complex biological organisms and ecosystems, (3) the brain and central nervous system to the phenomena of consciousness or ‘mind’, and (4) the emergence of spirit within the natural order, including the question of its ultimate nature and origin” (Clayton 2008: 191).

Clayton’s concept of the emergence of spirit attempts to steer a middle path between materialism and dualism, two paradigms in the philosophy of mind that have been in competition since earliest times. With the rise of the neurosciences and the increasing correlation between brain states and mind states, many scientists have been led to abandon any notions of spirituality altogether, while once confident believers are finding their confidence shrinking as a dualist philosophy of mind appears to become increasingly unsustainable.

Thinking about emergence in its various forms is an interesting and fascinating way in which to think about how mind, body nature and spirit can be thought of as a connected and unified field in which we are an integral part.
