Weekend Workshops / Block Seminars

The Mercurial Fountain – Alchemy and the Language of the Dream

A Four day weekend seminar on alchemy, dream analysis and active imagination with Renee Ramsden, John Gosling, Fernand Schaub

5 – 9 April 2012
Time: Thursday: 19:30 – 21:00 and Friday – Monday: 09:00 – 15:00

These seminars are aimed at qualified therapists who have a serious interest in dream-analysis from the perspective of Jungian analytical psychology

Jung wished to illustrate how the psyche offers images through dreams over time, which eventually culminates in the mandala. For this purpose, he took a selection of 81 dreams from Wolfgang Pauli’s work (CWV12) and tracked the consistent appearance of the mandala, culminating in a final mandala image, the dream of the World Clock. He says: When I began drawing the mandalas, I saw that everything, all the paths I had been following, all the steps taken, were leading back to a single point. It became increasingly plain to me that the mandala is the centre. It is the exponent of all paths. It is the path to the centre, to individuation. (MDR, p.222)

In examining the process that Pauli went through in his analysis of his dreams, we will be able to see how the Self synchronizes the dream material leading Pauli to a unifying vision, a vision that unifies his personal psyche with the cosmos. The spirit Mercurius corresponds to what Jung called, in his Red Book, the Spirit of the Deep, which synchronizes human events on both the collective and individual scale.

Individuation is the individual’s approach to their own wholeness, and all paths, however circuitous, leads to the centre. The process of individuation is the approach to the heart of the forest of the psyche and the mandala is the expression of holding the paradoxical realities of life in balance. We are offering our three approaches to this vast topic.

Renee will offer an in-depth look at the dream series of Wolfgang Pauli. John will offer two seminars on active imagination and mandalas in the Red Book. Fernand Schaub will offer two seminars on the light in the darkness of the nigredo through the medium of fairytales and legends.
We look forward to sharing this enriching journey with you.

For more information, and the whole programme please contact Renee Ramsden 021 761 5781; or fax 021 761 2398 or on renee@netpoint.co.za.

Touching the Core offers opportunities to get more in touch with yourself, including your body, honouring it as one expression of who you are and supporting it as a source of wisdom in your life.

Through the body we connect with our loved ones, do our work, speak our truth, make love, become creative, live our spirituality, dance, move, and so much more. In turn everything that we experience also shows as a physical sensation in the body, yet most of the time we are much more in touch with our thinking than with our bodily experience in a situation. Mostly we pay attention to the body when we are ill or in pain. Then we may seek support from a doctor, a health practitioner or energy healer. We feel uncomfortable and we want to feel good. It seems like a loving attitude but if we look a little more deeply this way of relating to our body actually has an element of rejection. We experience pain and we want to get rid of it. We reject what is going on inside us and so in this moment we are rejecting ourselves. Once we feel better again we carry on. Many of the longer term, chronic debilitating diseases that affect the quality of our lives are rooted in this way of relating to our body and our experience.

Touching the Core recognises this way of being as a way of seeking a joyful, light and happy existence. It also recognises that it is a strategy that often creates the opposite of what we are looking for.

The bodywork sessions and coaching sessions at Touching the Core are an opportunity for you to reconnect with yourself and your body, to feel what is going on inside and to be with it. As a practitioner I bring an open listening space and supportive presence to the session. In the bodywork sessions such as Shiatsu and Intuitive Massage listening happens mainly through touch. The practitioner then brings awareness to areas of muscle tension or energy patterns through gentle touch, firm pressure and various body movements. In a coaching session the listening happens in form of a coaching conversation. This may start with the exploration of a body experience or of any other aspect of your life.

To benefit from any of the offerings you do not need to have any physical symptoms or specific issues. Whilst Touching the Core sessions often have a strong healing effect and open up new possibilities the primary intention is to allow you to get in touch with yourself and your body, to bring awareness to physical sensations and experiences. From here, pain and tension often change and release by themselves leaving us more connected and free to move forward.

And what about healing and feeling good?
Whilst we often assume that by working on ourselves and our symptoms we can alleviate our pain I have found that we often miss a step here. This step is bringing awareness and including our experience in the moment – both pleasant and unpleasant – in a friendly way. When we do this rejection stops and the experience can change and move. In this process healing often happens spontaneously and we may even find new insights into ourselves and our lives that can support us in acting in the world in an open, free and loving way.
Touching the Core offerings

Shiatsu literally means “finger pressure”. At its foundation is the healthy flow and balance of energy (Ki) within the body and in relation to the world around us. The Shiatsu practitioner utilises touch and gentle finger pressure to different parts of the body to support it in restoring this balance.

Intuitive Massage is a form of massage that combines various massage techniques and a strong intuitive connection with the receiver. This form of massage works with oils and the practitioner uses her hands and arms, constantly listening to the receiver’s body. This makes each massage session unique and responsive to what is alive in the body in the moment.

Reiki has also been described as the art of laying on of hands. It is the use of touch to channel life-energy or Ki through the palms of the hands to support a person’s own energy system in restoring its natural flow and balance. The Reiki practitioner places her hands in different positions on or above the body simply working as a conduit for the universally present essential energy.

Core Coaching is a form of Life-Coaching based on the teachings of Zen Coaching. In Zen Coaching we recognise that who we truly are does not need change or improvement. The Coaching process primarily supports us to connect more deeply with ourselves through our experience in the present moment. Naturally our choices and actions then become an expression of the joy, strength, love, peace, freedom and clarity that we are and that is always available right here right now. (For more information on Zen Coaching see www.zen-coaching.com). I am currently a student in this approach and am offering sessions at a reduced rate.

Come gather ’round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You’ll be drenched to the bone
If your time to you is worth savin’
Then you better start swimmin’ or you’ll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin’

Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won’t come again
And don’t speak too soon
For the wheel’s still in spin
And there’s no tellin’ who that it’s namin’
For the loser now will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin’

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don’t stand in the doorway
Don’t block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There’s a battle outside and it is ragin’
It’ll soon shake your windows and rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin’

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don’t criticize
What you can’t understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is rapidly agin’
Please get out of the new one if you can’t lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin’

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast

The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is rapidly fadin’
And the first one now will later be last
For the times they are a-changin’

As we move into this new year of 2012, I hear lots of people voicing hopes, goals, dreams and desires, for making this year, a better, more successful one than 2011. I would like to share with you some understanding and advice on setting your Goals, in ways that make them easier to Achieve. I hope also to point out a couple of common pitfalls, which you can choose to avoid when setting your goals.

Those of you who attended my talks will recall how we discussed at length the difference between your “Conscious Mind” and your “Conditioned Mind” (or Unconscious/Subconscious mind). Using your Conscious Mind more intelligently to give clear instructions to the Conditioned Mind, makes it easier for your Conditioned Mind to create the results you desire. This applies more than ever when setting goals:

• Your Conscious Mind is the Goal Setter – you reason, think and plan what we want in your life, and judge the results, using your Conscious intellect.

• However, your Conditioned Mind is the Goal Getter – it is in this domain that most of the work is done to achieve your goals.

Understanding this, you can see how important it is for you to set clear instructions, in a way which is easy for your Conditioned Mind to follow, making it easier for it to create what you want in your life.

Achieving goals is about CHANGE! Keep doing what you are doing, and you will keep getting what you are getting. You don’t need any goal for that, as you are already doing it. However, if you want different results in your life, then you need to change what you do. This can be challenging. Many of us like to stay within our comfort zone. It feels safer to keep walking the same old path, than to venture out onto a new one. But if you want to get to somewhere new, you need to alter your route. The only way to achieve any new goal is to Change.

There are two vital elements you need in order to achieve ANY goal. Almost ever goal you have not achieved comes down to one of these being absent:

• A real desire to achieve the goal. If you really, really, really want something, then you will move Heaven and Earth to get it. The more you want it, the more likely you are to get it.

• Belief that you can achieve the goal. If you doubt your ability to get what you want, you will most likely manifest that doubt.

As a Life Coach, I can’t help you with the first element. Only you can decide what you want, and how badly you want it. I do however have techniques, which can easily help you to release any limiting beliefs in your ability to achieve your goals.

There are many different models on how to set goals, in order to word them in a way which your Conditioned Mind can work with easily. I prefer to keep things simple, so I will share with you the basic technique of setting a “SMART” goal. First get clear on what result it is you really want to achieve. Write it down, and then check if it is SMART using the guide below.

Is your goal:

• S – Specific and Simple

• M – Measurable and Meaningful to you

• A – As if now, Achievable, and relevant to All areas of your life

• R – Realistic and Responsible (Ecological)

• T – Timed and Towards what you want

You will probably find yourself rewriting your goal several times as you refine it, to get it to fulfil all of these criteria. It can also help to work with someone on to get your goal just right. Fresh eyes, or experienced ones, can often see things that you overlook. Here is a format for starting off your goals which I recommend: “It is now 2pm on the 3rd of May 2012 (timed) and I have just completed/achieved(as if now)…. fill in your goal here

Some common mistakes to steer clear of:

• Setting too many goals. What you FOCUS on is what you get! It is much easier to focus on your goals if you work on only one, or two, or at most three goals at a time. Having twenty goals make look great on paper, but you are unlikely to be properly focussed on any of them.

• Make sure your goal is one individual goal. Clients often come to me with complex goals, which are actually several goals rolled into one. Again this detracts from the focus, and makes it harder to achieve.

• Setting goals for things you don’t really want. This may sound obvious, but if you don’t really want something, you are less likely to make the effort to achieve it. This would include goals you set to try and keep others happy.

• Not acting on your goals. Just setting the goal is not enough, you also need to act on it. Ideally you should take the first step as soon as you have set the goal. Make an action plan on how you will get to your goal.

There is obviously a lot more to be said about Setting Goals, and there is much I can do with Clients to ensure they achieve their goals once they have set them. I have great techniques to enhance and intensify goals, and to help plant them deeper into the Conditioned Mind. These really need to be done individually and transmitted in person.

I hope you chose to take value from what I have shared here. My January talk at Constellation House (15th February, at 6.45 for 7pm) will expand on this same topic of Goal Setting.

So if you would like to explore this further, please ring or email me to book your seat. You are welcome to bring a goal or two with you, in case we have time to work on them in more detail.

There she specialised in Somatic Psychology, a field in psychology that looks at the interconnection between the body and the mind in psychological processes, development and healing. She believes that for healing and growth to occur multiple levels of the self and experience need to be addressed, incorporated and integrated into therapy such as the body, mind and spirit.

Cape is so full of creative hubs it’s no wonder it was recently voted World Design Capital for 2014. One of those hubs is the Montebello Design Centre in Newlands. On a recent visit I was drawn to the courtyard at the bottom left of the property, where the work of Right Sculptures adorns every corner. The business is named after the owner, but it is Right in more ways than one. Although I came looking only for a small bench for the front garden at Constellation House, once I entered that wonderland of figures, animals and hearts I ended up with a little more: A life-size pig (one can comfortably sit on it), a laughing African Buddha with a well-shaped belly and two heart bowls. Right was so happy that he generously gave me a big wooden heart as well. One can’t go wrong in buying Right sculptures!

Since this newsletter is about stories, I thought to attempt a little mini story about Right Sculptures, which is actually a partnership between Right, the businessman, and his brother Tarasai, the artist. It looks like an ideal partnership to me. They started six years ago when they arrived in Cape Town from Zimbabwe and now their courtyard at Montebello has three sculptors at work, carving away amid freshly-shaven wood pieces that smell of camphor, pine and other woods I am not so familiar with, all from local tree fellers. The smell of fresh wood awakens my senses and curiosity.

I asked Tarasai what his approach to starting a sculpture was. He said sometimes he follows the shape of the wood and lets it emerge organically (an artist after my own heart!); at other times he gets an idea of a figure or animal that he wants to create and then he plans more before starting. If he really likes a piece he finds it hard to sell, but it also makes him happy if buyers love the sculptures that are close to his heart.

The carvers of Right Sculptures are there to work and carve every day, no matter what the weather. When it rains, they take shelter in a wendy house where they can work on smaller pieces.

They are looking to expand to other places they can sell from; I wish them much luck!
